75 letters from Mr. Masson 1776-1800
Madeira July 28, 1776
Dear Sir
I have sent you a small collection of Plants, some of them I flatter myself will prove new, but the greatest part I have not been able to ditermin, their being a great similiarity between many of the Plants here and those of the S of Europe. and all my Botanical authors treated on W India Plants therefor I wanted much some of S of Europ authors. I have been over but a small part of the Island yet, but have been very successfull havein collected about two Hundred Plant species, there is many of the Trees which I have not yet seen in Blossom viz Tolhinda, Fraya [Freya], Poa Branc, Mermulana, Aderno, &c. The Mermulana grow on Rocks some of which are 1000 feet perpendicular, which renders it very hazardus to come at them without being let down with a Rope.
I have not sent you the Portugee names, nor the Loco of the plants, not having time to get them corrected, but when refer it till I send you my own collection, which will be in a few months. I shall soon run short of Paper, so that a Rim of Brown paper would be necessary.
