desirable if an assistant is appointed that he should be in attendance from 9 oclock to 3 or 4 in the afternoon to be in readiness for weighing whatever may be brought to the office.

It is proper to observe that there is an allowance paid to the Weigher on the Bank Tokens - but he receives no fee or allowance beyond his Salary - on Government work - and this has been increased by the Bullion brought to the Mint by the Commissary. **

It seems fair to mention that in the same proportion as the Weigher & Tellers business is increased, so is the business of the other officers employed in the accounting & rating & standarding the Ingots and should anything be done for the Weigher, they of course will expect the same to be done for them.

** At this moment there is a very large quantity of provisional Dollars the weighing, Accounting, Standarding &c of which will take up the officers 5 or 6 days, but they received no allowance for this duty - although there was formerly nothing of this sort.  There are also frequently deposits of Gold made by the Commissary.  The officers therefore have of late been obliged to act not for the purposes of Coinages only, but also in keeping account of Bullion lodged in the Mint.
