St Salvador 25th Augst. 1799           

Dear Sir

     You will be a little surprised to hear from me at this place, we came in on the 12th having made the Coast a little to the windward of Cape St. Rock.  As soon as we got to Sea we discovered a very serious leak in the Stern of the Ship.  it increased so fast that we were under the necessity of living on the Deck.  The 3rd July we parted Company with the Convoy intending to stop at some of the Cape [indecipherable] Islands thinking we could do what was wanted but the Captain changed his mind
We saild  from Portsmouth with the wind at S.E. which continued to Latd 19º North, where we
