Dear Sir

I had the pleasure of receiving your Letter of 8th April last and beg to return my grateful  acknowledgment of your kindness.  I have  written to my friend Horne whose attention has ever been sincere.  I only regret that I so little deserve it.

The unfortunate misunderstanding which has subsisted between the Governor and myself; ever since the business of the French Officers, has been confined me to my duty at Head Quarters; this with a bad state of health has hindered me from attending much much to Natural History.  I have however a Corpl in the Regiment who I employ to go in the woods and some times he is very successful particularly in shooting both Quadropeds and Birds. It was this man who discovered the [Cooler?] which I gave to the Governor; being the first ever seen here.  Mr Lewin made a very bad drawing of it which the Governor informed me he had sent
