Director 16 leags to the NW
of the Texel April 16th 1797

Dear Sir

I imagine you must have heard how suddenly we left the Humber - it would have been a great gratification to me to have had the honor to see you on board the Director and I assure you I would have been a zealous defender of your Domains and felt it a happy charge consigned to me .

I am extremely sorry I cannot send you a complete survey of the Humber.  I was very unwell while there but I have laid down a correct plan of the entrance, upon which you may rely & draw any conclusion therefrom you may be in need of.  At Grimsby they are digging a wet Dock, and have great confidence from the back-water they can procure, there can be made a good cutt for Vessels of two or three hundred tons burden, but of this I imagine you are particularly informed.  I shall send you the only plan of the opperations I could get.  It wil make Grimsby the Sunk & Hawk Roads extremely elligible places for Men of War to be supplied at, and it will no doubt make Grimsby a Town of considerable Trade.
