strong blossom this year & promise to ripen some fruit, yet the plumb stocks were only put into the pots the day the Operation was performed last year: whence I entertain no doubt but that plumb Stocks obtained from Seed sowed in pots would afford Trees to bear well the Year after grafting, by approach.

I am afraid some Members of the Horticultural Society (not the wisest of them) are sceptical concerning the possibility of getting good new varieties of Fruit in this Climate; & therefore I feel a Wish that something like a Committee should be appointed in the Autumn to receive any varieties which might be sent, & give a Report as to their Qualities; for as I am certain that a vast deal may be done in that Field; I wish all doubts to be removed as soon as possible & shall have great pleasure in sending such apples & grapes as I have: of the latter I have some promising kinds & I hope some of my new apples will escape the frost & caterpillars.

I am my dear Sir very sincerely yours
