Bark was taken off in August last to prevent to return of the descending Sap, succeeded most completely in omitting bark; but removing them to a new Hot-Bed they got burnt. The upper part of one with a bark however escaped, & that promises to make a Tree. Looking over the du Hamel I however found that my Ideas are not quite original for he recommends a Ligature to be put around the Branch before it is used as a Cutting yet it does not appear to be by any means understood the Cause of the advantages to be derived, or indeed how ever tried the Experiment; but he appears always on the Verge of discovering every thing which good Fortune has subsequently thrown in my way.
I have been more vexed with the Frost for destroying a fine Crop of Walnuts on my young Grafted trees if five feet high than even for the Loss of our apples, few of the latter we have no very great [indecipherable] owing to the Insects having last year destroyed our leaves.
