And for this Establishment of a Cutter poor Bligh must be deprived of his preferment, for it seems a Lieut cannot command a Sloop. & a Master & Commander is above taking command of a Cutter. If How will make Bligh Master & Commander, then the vessel can be put on the Establishment of a Sloop of War: & Bligh will gain several advantages by it in the mean time, & be intitled [entitled] to be made Post, on his return. If this can be accomplished, then Lochead could possibly be appointed Surgeons Mate, or if he was called Botanist, he would at least be ready upon emergence to help them with his Medical knowledge. I think it seems strange to be sent a two years voyage, out of the way of all help, & have but one person of any Knowledge of Medicine.
Pray Sir could not you represent these things to Lord How, & use your influence with him to give Bligh the preferment of Master & Commander. It was certainly the hopes of Preferment, & the spirit of a Navy
