St. Marys Septr. 14th 1787.

Sir,
I took the liberty of troubling you some posts ago with a letter concerning Mr. Lockhead;  since which I have got a letter by yesterdays post from Mr. Bligh, who thinks it will not easily be got done, by reason of Lords Hows [Howe's] having already fixed the Establishment of the Vessel, or People going to the South Seas on this occasion.

But I was sorry to find by it, that Mr. Bligh himself is but very indifferently used, or rather I think realy ill used for he seems to have lost hopes of getting any preferment at going out, & God knows who may be at the head of the Admiralty at his return.  It would have been [indecipherable] Justice to him, to have made him Master & Commander before sailing: nay considering that he was, I believe, the only person that was not in some way or other preferd [preferred] at their return of all who went last out with Capt Cook, it would be no unreasonable thing to make him Post Captain now; more especially as Ld: How [Howe] made Captain Hunter Post when he went out lately to Botany Bay with Commodore Phillips. Hunter & Bligh were in very similar situations, they had both been Masters, &
