I could scarcely believe when you shewed me that letter. I do not find many new things in their gardens here; they have what they call Elaeodondron of Jacquin, whether it be so or not I cannot tell.
I had no success with Burman at Amsterdam: after going 4 times in vain, & walking some miles, I found him at home; I told him I wished much to see his Herbarium; he said he was very sorry his numerous occupations would not admit of it that day, but if I stayed some days longer in Amsterdam, he might find an opportunity some time or other. Having already waited some days, I had no inclination on so cool an invitation to wait longer, so took my leave. Van Royen says he is very ignorant & inaccurate, & that he will never do Botany any service. What do you think they call Cassytha baccifera in the Amsterdam Garden? Aloe Perlata! I presumed humbly to remonstrate with Burman on the subject, but he would not listen, so it is a blunder made with his eyes open.
