"schools of France.  The Directory have lately been very much pleased with the approbation of the Royal Society to their various literary establishments, & some gentlemen have informed me that letters of recommendation from men eminent in science wd. have more weight than from men in power, but I know not whom to apply to for assistance in this way, unless S.r "Jos.h Banks or yourself wd. do me that honour.  I feel very sensibly the liberty I am taking in making this request;  which I hope a consideration of the circumstances will induce you to pardon.  My address is at Mr. Jacques Secretan, Laussanne."
