& has been employed in marking out allotments of land for the Settlers.  I inclose a copy of his report of the nature of the soil, for some miles to the Westward, Northward, & to the North East of Parramatta, it will not lead you to form a better opinion of the Country, than it deserves, for I had very particularly cautioned him to make his report in such a manner, that it might appear hereafter the ground was to the full as good, or better than what might be expected from his report. There is also some very good land to the Southward & Southeast of Parramatta. I would wish you to shew Burton's letter to Lord Mulgrave, for it is probable that he will have a very different account of this Country, from some of those Gentlemen who are on their passage home.  Recently Major Grose met some of the Officers of the late Sirius in the Cape, & to use the Major's expression, the Country was most infamously misrepresented to him, I believe by the Surgeon & Captn Clerk.  The few Cattle we have, grow exceeding fat, & the Cape Ewes too fat to breed, although they are kept up the greatest part of the day & all night.  All our fruit trees thrive well, & I have
