You would pity me if you know what sheets of paper I fill annualy with this general refusal but if I do relaxd but ever so little I should be undone the rogues would gnaw me to peices in the newspaper &c & the honest man never suffer me to have time for my ordinary avocations by the dailey applications they would expect me to make as the public officer &c The minister & secretaries with whom they write firstly tell me they are unacquainted & how often should I be found fault with for the failure which they would attribute to my neglect unwilling to suffer their own company to deserve less than general admiration or public reward

To say that no secret the disclosure of which has hitherto been purchased by the public has been in any degree worth the money it cost is to say a strong word but I will say that I do not recollect one in my time if you
