regiment. On their way they passed a melon field whereupon some of the horse holders descended upon the melons. Presently the officer rode up & wanted to know who was in charge.
I will continue in the unfortunate fellow's own words.
"They all said that I was in charge of them & so he took my name, and, though I only had one slice of the melon which these other chaps went in and got it cost me 15/-shillings, when it came to the knowledge of the old man".
