fires shed a cosy radiance over mahogany tables & beautifully stuffed arm chairs which were so comfortable as to be a special invitation for a tired man to go to sleep. The writing tables were provided with notepaper & envelopes timetables &c. Away from the writing table & the hard backed chairs a person could slip into the welcome arms of the stuffed lounge chairs & if he felt in a smoking humor he need not grope for matches, for on a little table at his elbow there was an ample supply of wooden matches free. This commodity was so scarce that civilians outside had to struggle for the privilege of paying
