October 25th 1916
We marched from the showground before daylight, most of us weary after the exciting farewells at Goulburn and from our friends in Sydney. As usual the march to the ship at Woolloomooloo Bay was a struggling mix up of lady friends & relatives so that it was a decided relief to say the last goodbye ere we filed up the gangway of the troopship "Ascanius".
There were over 1500 soldiers aboard – all reinforcements. We were all paid up to date, so that the deferred pay would date from embarkation. Each unit was kept together as much as possible by being classified for mess deck
