to make the trenches about four times as wide as we wanted at the top and slope the sides in at the bottom. We would then put in hurdles the required distance apart and fill in the space behind them. Even when we had the trenches finished we would have to keep working on them for as soon as a breath of wind arose the sand would drift in and fill them again.

Life on the desert was pretty rotten. We were cut off from everyone all we could see were the undulating wastes of the desert dotted here and there with a tuft or two of rank coarse grass. Our rations water and mail were brought to us by camel transport from the railhead which was about four miles away. The rations were short and the only means we had of getting a wash was by saving a little
