drop some bombs on some of us who were playing cards in the reserve trench. Luckily they dropped short and no one was hurt.

On June 6th a party from the 7th Brigade successfully raided the Hun trenches doing considerable damage and taking some prisoners.

Two days later we heard of Lord Kitchener's death. This threw a gloom over everything for a while but we realised that it was no use worrying but just to carry on as usual.

On the 21st I went to Fort Rompie to see Jack. I found him in good health and as full of life as ever.

On the night of the 25th [June] a party made up of the biggest men from each of the battalions in our brigade raided the German lines and brought back some prisoners. The bombardment was
