The enemy therefore quickly launched a counter attack, & the advance troops had to evacuate, leaving behind some of our wounded. These were dressed by the Germans who also gave them hot coffee. "We will leave you in the dugout," said they, "Comrades get you next morning", which we did.
Fritz counter-attacked along a trench to the right of the main road, & also on our left his object being to flank us left & right.
