October 22nd: -
Twenty-one to-day and feeling absolutely splendid.
The weather was perfect and the change a welcome one. Being relieved from Ward there was little to do, so the day was spent on deck.
We passed Gibraltar about midnight, the night fine and warm.
October 23rd: -
Again, to our dismay it was cold & windy.
On duty in F2, cleaning, for morning only, the afternoon being free. A debate, on "Should sport be abolished during the war" was held after tea and the arguments on both sides good & convincing. The Aye party, however, won.
October 24th: -
Sunny and warm to-day. Divine service on well deck at 10 am & 7 pm and nothing done between.
October 25th: -
Finished to-day the preparations in F2 for the reception of patients on the morrow at Malta. A fine concert was held after tea every item being enjoyable.
October 26th: -
Sighted Malta at 7 am, and, whilst making our way to the inner harbour at 10 am an alarming incident occurred.
At 9-45 am several destroyers were sighted, and one came close enough to us for to pass a message to our captain. She had just turned to leave us when her guns fired (2) and almost simultaneously a gun on shore also spoke.
