'the Spot'.   Buglers sounded last post & all stood to Attn.   (Ceremony marred by slight error on part of heads as the landmark saluted was really a lighthouse & the Birkenhead monument was passed in darkness at 8 p.m. (1 ½ hours later).   At sunset the mountainous cliffs of this coast presented a grand aspect.   R.K. [Rudyard Kipling]  was correct in writing "Opal & ash of roses - Cinnamon, umber & dun".   That is the true African colouring.

17th   In Capetown, under the cold gloom of the misty block of stone called Table Mt.   To the right the Lion's Head, to the left Groote Schür.   At first sight a Hell of a place to come to.
