a medal on the union with Ireland intendd for the distribution as a Royal Bounty on that memorable occasion.

for the execution of this Token medal Mr Merchant had ample time allowd him to Enable any professional die sinker to have finishd it in time for before the Splendid opportunity that offerd of Giving publicity to his Talents Should arrive, but it was not produced while it was practicable to apply it to the Purpose for which it was intended, the The union Remains uninscribed in the medallic of this Country history of this Country & the medal Continues Still unfinishd in Mr Merchants hand, from whence we have had little hope of seeing that as that as any Die work whatever issue as work of the duty other simple work of the office to which he has been appointed Even at any time Issue it is however but [indecipherable] to add, that the present head of the King on the half Guinea & Seven Shilling Peices which is from a design of Mr Merchants, is better than any thing that has appeard on our Coins during the Present Reign, mutilated as it is by extreme inaccuracy in Copying of the Mint

To remedy this intolerable ill State Greivance the first thing which Self Evidently Requires to be done is to make the office of Chief # Engraver to H.M. mint both respectable & Lucrative, This nation  undoubtedly the Richest in Europe Cannot probably Create an Expenditure more productive of national honor, than the allotment of Emolument to their Office Sufficient to Render the Enjoyment of it Capable of satisfying the ambition of the best die sinker in Europe wherever In what Place ever he may have been born, or wherever he may Reside & be Employed

This may Easily be done in the reestablishment of the mint after the introduction of the new machines

Note # This Idea ought clearly to be extended to the Bank one of the best Engravers in England Should be retained on a handsome Salary to Engrave retouch & Reingrave as often as necessary The device, whenever a good one has been adopted in the Place of the infantine Baby & bee hive which now disgraces the taste of the Country in the corner of Every Bank note Circulated by the Government Company of the bank of England should be exchangd for a better device
