Soho Square June 3d 1789
Mr. Masson

The Plants you have sent home have succeeded much better than any you sent home when you was last at the Cape that we have every reason to praise your industry & to see the Propriety of a search near the place of your residence in preference to expensive Journeys up the Country which seldom produce an adequate return in realy ripe seeds

I hope that before this time you have taken up your head Quarters as I directed at False bay, the most rare plants to be met with in European herbariums are from that place & you know that one rare describd Plant is worth two per descripts.

I intended about this time to have asked leave of his Majesty to order you to Botany bay but finding from your Letter to Mr. Aiton that you had an aversion to the place I have made interest that another person should be sent there & I hope I shall succeed.

I was surprisd to hear that you had not taken up your money from the Governor of False bay to whom I recommended you, was it because he could not give it to you upon so good Terms as other people or for other reasons.  I have no doubt you have good ones but as I wishd him who had so much in his Power to be usefull to you, I was sorry you had not agreed with him.
