                                                 ARTICLES   of   AGREEMENT

Indented made concluded and agreed upon -.upon this first day of April in the year of our Lord -
One thousand eighthundred and one BETWEEN The Right Honorable SIR JOSEPH BANKS of Soho Square in the County of Middlesex - Baronet for and on behalf of his Majesty by virtue of the authority in this behalf given to the said Sir Joseph Banks by the Commissioners of his Majesty's Navy of the one part and EDWARD PORTER of Moulton in the County of Lincoln WILLIAM HOLGATE of Spalding in the said County SIMON BENSTEAD of Whapload Drove in the same County WILLIAM REYNOLDS of Whapload Drove aforesaid MARK EVERSON of Pinchbeck in the same County and JOSEPH SEYMOUR of Pinchbeck aforesaid Labourers of the other part.

WHEREAS the said Sir Joseph Banks for and on behalf of his Majesty has contracted and agreed with the said Edward Porter, William Holgate, Simon Benstead, William Reynolds, Mark Everson, and Joseph Seymour, to go to the East Indies for the purpose of cultivating hemp and properly preparing the same for the manufacturing of rope and of Sail Cloth on the terms and Conditions hereinafter mentioned  HOW  THESE PRESENTS

WITNESS   that in consideration of the Wages hereinafter agreed to be paid to the said Edward Porter William Holgate Simon Benstead William Reynolds Mark Everson and Joseph Seymour  They do hereby severally Covenant engage and agree to and with the said Sir Joseph Banks to depart for the Province of Bengal in the East Indies at such time and by such Ship or Vessel as the said Sir Joseph Banks shall appoint and immediately upon their arrival there they do hereby further severally Covenant engage and agree to Commence the Cultivation of the Hemp Plant under the Superintendance and Direction of the Governor General of the said Province or his Agents for that purpose appointed and for the space of three ears next after their Arrival in the said Province to devote their whole time skill Labour and attention to the cultivation of the said Plant and to the properly preparing the same for the Manufacture of Ropes and of Sail Cloth at such times in such places and in such manner as the said Governor General for the time being or his Agents shall direct or appoint And for the purpose of the more extensively propagating the said Hemp Plant and preparing the same as aforesaid shall and -
