For will be always t̶h̶e̶  better for the Plants than any other that can be procurd.  Monkeys Goats Dogs Cats & in short every animal that is not confined is to be dreaded, as the smell of the earth is very attractive even to those that do not u̶s̶e̶  eat vegetables f̶o̶o̶d̶  & tempts them to scratch, it is to be hopd that none of the two first will be permitted on board as howsoever cautiously they m̶a̶y̶ ̶b̶e̶  are c̶o̶n̶f̶i̶n̶e̶d̶  lookd after they may if they escape destroy the whole garden in half an hour the mischief of most other animals however if they are properly confined may with due attention be guarded against if they are not suffered to be numerous. Rats mice & cockroaches are the natural enemies of Plants on board a ship   they destroy them by Gnawing the bark & young buds which you must constantly examine in order to be aware of their mischief before any great progress is made   the utmost attention will naturely
