the other poor boys were bewailing their hard luck in being unable to get a pick-me-up I interviewed a seasoned steward & fastened the "glad eye" on him, assuring him that I was a discreet man & could he get me a bottle of whisky. He blandly made an appointment after dark which he kept & I exchanged with him fifteen shillings for a bottle of Walker's. then I sought out my own especial pal & we discussed that bottle in a dark corner of the bulwarks. I may say here that for Australian soldiers – especially the young ones – it is better to be without a liquor canteen aboard ship.
