wholesome & there was a fair supply of it. The representatives of the Salvation Army & YMCA kept us well supplied with magazines & chewing gum till the last ran out on popular demand. There was a dry canteen dispensing tobacco, cigarettes, tinned fruit & soft drinks at reasonable prices. So far as I know all Australian transports are "dry" – at least as far as the men are concerned. The saloon where the officers foregathered was of course amply endowed with John Barleycorn & I believe the sergeants who had their own separate mess had a decreed allowance of grog. While
