different treatment from that r̶e̶q̶u̶i̶r̶e̶d̶ ̶b̶y̶  of a garden on Shore.

The Principal enemy to the health of Plants in Long voyages is the S̶a̶l̶t̶ spray of the Sea which seldom fails to rise into the air
at such times as the wind is high Enough to turn over the tops of the waves with what the Seamen call White Caps & to fall in the form of a Salt dew on every thing it meets with, if the Leaves of a Plant are wetted with this dew the Salt contained in it
Crystallises upon their surfaces as they become dry & unless it is speedily washed off with fresh water the Plant infallibly Perishes

The most constant attention must therefore be hourly paid to this circumstance & the Greatest Care taken that whenever this salt dew appears in the air in the slightest degree the windward s̶i̶d̶e̶  & top scuttles & Parts of the Cabbin be shut on the Lee s̶c̶u̶t̶t̶l̶e̶s̶   [side?] also as soon as it becomes sufficiently prevalent to come in by that road & if by a̶n̶y̶  mischance it is found to have s̶e̶t̶t̶l̶e̶d̶
