The reports about the Italian fiasco are gruesome and one can infer how overwhelming our victories must have been. I feel no pity for the renegade Italian rabble who so ungratefully deserted us even though we had raised and nurtured them.</p><p>12th/1/18.<br />America has given its response to our Christmas peace proposals. Wilson addressed Congress on the 9th of January and set forth America&#39;s objectives as follows:</p><p>[original image in English]<br />1) open peace covenants without private international understandings;<br />2) absolute freedom of the seas;<br />3) the removal of economic barriers;<br />4) the establishment of international equality in trade conditions;<br />5) a guarantee for the reduction of national armaments;<br />6) the impartial adjustment of colonial claims based on the principle of the wishes of those governed;<br />7) the evacuation of Russian territory;<br />8) the opportunity to be given to Russia for political development;</p>
