                                           -Wombi-

This was a kind of yam, the root of a slender
vine that grew in the scrubby gullies, and was
dug up by the women with their wombi (yam)
sticks  €“ It varied in thickness from about an
inch and a half to half that size, and a few
inches in length  €“ When baked in the ashes it
was very palatable and we children were very
fond of it  €“ The young tender stalk of the
gigantic lily  €“ after having been soaked for a
time in water  €“ was also roasted and eaten  €“
