St Christopher July 26 1790

Dear Sir

I hope you will receive a cargo * of Plants by Mr. Stanley Soliciter General of this Island who Sailed by the last Convoy.  The reason of not writing by the said opportunity was his assuring me that he would not go untill the first of August, and going to spend a few days at Nevis when on my return I found he had taken his departure.  I now send what remains of My collection having added a few curious plants from the Island of Nevis.

I have lived in a state of obscurity & even contempt since I arrived in this Island, being unsupported by friends or Money I have not been able to carry my researches further than two or three of the neighbouring Islands, a Philosopher is Monster of Nature to the people in this part of the world.  I non can gain any esteem but those who join in the laudable practice of betraying the interest of their country & supporting the common enemy.

I have now an opportunity of visiting some of the Windward Islands where I shall pass two or three Months.  I long to hear from My friend Aiton.

I am dear Sir with the greatest
esteem Frans Masson

By favour of Capt Jullius,Ship Admiral Rodney

If you would be so good to honour me with a few lines. by addressing to Doctor Cochran. Basseterre St. Christopher he will forward it to me.

The above collection I left at Mr. Stanley's house directed to you so conclude he has taken them with him.  (Recd Decr. 7.1780
