Ration of Provision allowed by Government to the Convicts on the first embarkation.
For Six Convicts pr Week
16 Lbs. Bread
12 Lbs. Flour
14 Lbs. Beef
8 Lbs. Pork
12 Pints Peas
2 Lbs. Rice
1½ Lbs. Butter
The Two Rations it will be observed that 4 lbs. of Beef & 3 Lbs of Flour is taken from the allowed ration by Government & 7 Lbs. of Bread given in lieu. The reason for thinking this alteration better is that such a number of People together without employment living on too much Salt Food might create the Scurvy & other disorders in such a Passage. The same quantity of Food is given which it is thought will be the better. It is likewise proper and should be insisted on by Government that Eight Months of every species of Provisions should be laid in - in case of accidents or delay in getting into Calm Latitudes. It is my intention not only to lay in that quantity but to give Government the Surplus of the provision that may be left. A carefull agent should be employed to see that the Provision (of every Species) is good & wholesome.
