Ideas are much inclined to ossify with age, and from my own feelings I think that prejudices become more violent. It is not very easy to judge, however, in this sort of life, in which one's circle of thought is so much narrower than in civil life at home. There is at all events little abstract thinking such as the law demands, and it becomes more and more difficult to feel a real interest in the things that don't immediately concern
