They are a most wonderful little force – & a painfully neglected one. Relative to what they have done they have received far less recognition than infantry. Their casualties it is true are not on the Western scale but still they have been far from light. Then the living here is much rougher as a whole than in France. Taking it as a whole these men have for three years lived for like dogs for three among a filthy unattractive people in an exceedingly harsh land.
In my time not 3 percent of the force have had leave to Australia or England, nor have known the touch of a private home. They have had dozens of arduous little campaigns & scores of
