Extract from the Encyclopædia Britannica under the head of Hemp 

" Besides those uses of Hemp." Says that Valuable Book, " it is said to possess a property as a plant that renders it almost invaluable. Vizt -  " That of driving away almost all Insects that feed upon other Vegetables. Thence in some places of the Continent, they secure their Crops from their mischievous attacks by sowing a Bolt of Hemp round their Gardens, or any particular Spot they wish to preserve"
