either in the Spring or Fall whenever the Rains set in, and bears in about Seven Months - the first Year little more than half a Crop - it continues to improve 'till the third Year, when it begins to degenerate - in America it lasts only one Year - Cotton thrives best in a Light rich Soil fresh burnt off - giving it time to Cool and Moisten before the seed is put in the Ground -
A Southern Exposure is consider'd best - The Fields should be well Shelterd from Cold and bleak winds - Planting Hemp round Cotton is recommended to keep off the Chenille and other Insects injurious to the Cotton plant. -
There are various Species of Cotton Seed. The Persia is reckoned the finest - in the Bahama's, Anguilla turns out most productive and profitable, as it yields from 30 to 40 lb of Clean Cotton from 100. lb in the Seed, and produces 100 to 200lb net to the acre.
Where Cotton is Cultivated on a large Scale, Wind Mills & Cattle Gins have been found very advantageous, as they will Clean from 200 to 300 lb of Clean Cotton per Day - but on a Small Scale, the foot Gin is least expensive and Most Certain - One person can attend three to four acres - The Chief attention is keeping the Land Clean, and pruning judiciously, which is Only to be acquired by experience. -
