Porpoise Spithead 

January 11.th 1806

Sir

          I have just returned from Admiral Montague who informed me you had seen him concerning the Letter I wrote in answer to yours of the 6th Instant, he convinced me I had mistaken your meaning as to an attempt to open your Letters, as such, and being equally ready to make an Apology when wrong, as to take notice of an intended insult, I beg your pardon for having made use of the strong Expressions therein contained, this Sir I hope will be satisfactory the whole being a private correspondence.  The Admiral advises me to cultivate a good understanding with an Officer whose Command I am to be under on my arrival at New South Wales, that this is my Wish every Officer of this Ship can testify who has repeatedly heard me express it.  But the Admiral conceives I have the sole Command of this Ship until our Arrival at that place subject to your Orders as to Course and Rendezvous after we part Company with the Convoy under which we Sail, this is what I always conceived and when I sent you a Copy of
