Dear Sir

I have been favored with your note of the 15th January last, by Mr. Smith, who also delivered the parcel of seeds, but alas the passiflora quadrangularis perished on the passage. I must trust to the chapter of accidents for that desirable plant, as well as for the Female, or fertile, (fruit bearing) sort of Melicocca bijuga.
Sir Joseph Banks sent us a plant or two of the male tree about 12 or 13 years ago, from this we have many large trees, but all are completely male.

I have only seen Mr. Smith once, but you may be assured that it will not be our fault if he is not often down
