Edinb: [Edinburgh] 25 Feb 1778

Dear Sir
I left Londn  [London] the 6th ultimo and arrived here the 11th.  The Roads were tolerable and except in Cumberland very little Snow.

The Faculty received me with much Cordiality and especially the Drs Ramsay and Hope. Sorry am I to tell you, that the former is very ill.  The Physicians say he has either a Polypus or an ossification of the Aorta. I hope however they are mistaken. Visceral obstructions occasion at times the same symptoms, and curable.  He knows nothing of their opinion nor can any one make him acquainted with it.  Mrs Ramsay is a fine woman, is big with Child, and has the melancholy prospect of losing her Husband.

The Dr is about vacating his Chair in favr of Dr Dan Rutherford a very good young man.  I wish I had as much knowledge in that as I have liking for it.  Professor of that or the other Branch, Botany, would be my ambition.
