accounts & I may safely say they will be more so every year as we are daily discovering the soil inland to be much richer than any in this neighbourhood. The new settlement at the Hawkesbury promises well in short we want nothing but Cattle & proper encouragement given to those who chose to settle. Major Grose in my opinion has great merit in what he has already done there is a very good road made from hence to the Hawkesbury which makes our intercourse with Parramatta, Tongabby & the river very easy as a person can walk the whole in eight hours. About this time last year I made my long wish'd for excursion towards the Blue Mountains but I am sorry to say not with the success I expected we however reached about ten miles from Richmond Hill and discovered a Branch of the River which we traced to a Cascade falling through the chasm mentioned by Govr, Phillip. The mountains there were about 3000 feet high & in the Gaps not more than 100 yards from one another. The accident that happened to our Boats obliged us to Return after being out ten days, in about a month I intend making a second attempt after which I shall add both together & send you the acct. of our success.
