Calcutta at Blackstakes
Jany 7th 1796

Dear Sir

I have been kept so much in a state of suspense since I arrived here on Saturday last, that under an idea of giving you some information how I was to be disposed of, one day has slipt off after another untill now that I have received my Commission for the Director sixty four lying at Chatham, where I have hoisted the Pennant.  Lord Spencer has not only given me this step, but all my officers and men to be turned over as soon as I can clear the Calcutta.  I have presented my thanks to his Lordship for this peculiar mark of his attention, & I shall use the utmost vigilence  & dispatch as far as lies upon me.

It is  surprising how my private letters have escaped me - untill the day before yesterday one from Mrs Bligh was not delivered which informed me of her intrusion on your friendship, and of your very kind sollicitation for a vacancy for me in Greenwich Hospital.
