I thought Mr. Bond would have had an Equal promotion with him, because his services were Equal as one of my officers, besides his assistance to me in watching the covering & uncovering of the Plants, which was the most material thing & required hourly attendance Night & Day. I had a hope when I found Mr. Portlock refused going to Botany Bay, that his service might have been accepted; but Portlock deceived me there, & privately prepared Captn. Hunter to get a Mr. Waterhouse out, & he was appointed before I was aware of it, which was a very ungrateful act, for he was bound to Mr. Bond as well as to me to have given him the chance of an application. Mr. Bond has been in constant service. He was a very fine Youth when he was blown up in the last War in a Prize belonging to the Crescent Capn. T. Pakenham. He was cast away this War in the Active Frigate Capn. Leveson Gower upon the Isld of Anticosti, & he is now commanding the Netly gun Vessel, in which under the Command of Sir Richd. Strachan on the Coast of France in last August he was badly wounded. He continues a very active and Zealous Officer and is much
