My Dear Sir,
The Defence of Lt. Coll. Johnston ended this day with three Soldier Witnesses, & former Hunter's Character of Major Johnston of his being a worthy amiable Man. The Soldiers gave the most atrocious falsehoods in proof of my arbitrary character & stuck at nothing to lessen Johnston's guilt. One of the Soldiers a Sergeant Major when in the midst of his zeal and falsehood against me was suddenly seized with a fainting fit like the stroke of Death, & was taken out of court. I think it is fully evident to the Court that Johnston is Guilty. I am allowed until Wednesday to reply, at which time the summing up of Johnston's Counsel is to be read.
On my part the prosecution has been to the Charge only; but on the Defence they have entered into a systematic charge against me which we have rebutted by uncontrovertible evidence. Sir David Baird has appeared
