My Dear Sir
I determined not to trouble you in your retreat from Town with any account from me, but I hope it will not be unacceptable to you to know before you return, which I have been doing. -
From what you heard, I thought it highly probable that Lord Chatham notwithstanding his unaccountable conduct would certainly see me. I therefore from time to time have attended, but without success. To my astonishment on the 28th September Lieutenant Portlock was admitted to an audience. - Astonished at this, I determined to have it accounted for, and Mr. Stephens informed me that Lord Chatham had seen Lieut. Portlock because he wanted to go out of Town to his Family, and that his Lordship deferred seeing me untill he had leisure to have an half hours conversation. - Mr. Hunt also told me, he hoped I did not attribute Lord Chatham not seeing me to any thing unfavorable to me in his Lordship's mind, for he assured me he had liberty to say it was not, and that I would find it so when he had the leisure to see me.
