[Page 2]

I regret that I wrote for leave of absence, I did it to prevent delay in case you thought it necessary to be presented, and it deserved no contempt while they knew other Captains had received greater indulgence.  I received their answer of denial on the 17 Inst.

You will observe I have had my doubts how I was to be superceded, and thought it might have been done as I stated, but as that I now consider cannot be the case, I shall write my Dear Sir as you desire, and hope my suceeding commission will counter act any strictures by the Board of Admiralty, should they choose to make them on my giving up my ship - indeed on consideration, wording my letter in the way I propose  will have the desired effect, but should that in your opinion be wrong, Mrs Bligh will sign my name to a letter simply requesting to be superceded, that no time may be lost, as I think in a weeks time I still have the Warrior very nearly ready for sea, and circumstances may require my suddenly being ordered to sail.
