my orders instead of making it respect the course & places we were to touch at all would have been right;  but they seem to like puzzle, as my Commission and Captain Shorts order to command under me, make what they have said or done since but an inconceivable repetitions; and while his unaccountable opposition to unite in a friendly proceeding, impresses upon my mind a very foolish and malicious Character.  The Admiralty Letter to him is - "I am commanded by My Lords Comssr of the Admiralty to acquaint you that during Cap. Bligh's absence from the Porpoise you are to direct every thing within the Ship, but that you are to consider yourself under his orders with respect to the course you are to Steer, & the Ports at which you are to touch."  On receiving this Letter he sent me word he would obey such Signals & orders from me but no other .  He will be soon under my own training;  but for the public good, they should have named me not only Captain of the Porpoise, but Senior Captain of H.M. Ships & Vessels employed at New South Wales, authorising me in case of the Porpoise being sent from the Settlement to hoist a Pendant in any other Vessel.  At present I have no power when the Porpoise leaves me altho [although] I may assume it, and will do so.
