October 19th. 1795

Dear Sir

          I should have sailed from hence on Saturday last the the Coast of Orkney, to convoy home the A:W Ships, under the direction of Captain Lechmere in the Jupiter, had not a Mutiny taken place, in the  Defiance (commanded by Sir Geo. Horne) .   Yesterday there were several messages sent the mutineers from Admiral Pringle, which they received in their barricaded appartments [apartments] with no trifling arrogance.  The grievances they wanted to have redressed were, - a New Captain, - A new Lieutenant, - liberty to go on Shore, and their Grog to be mixed with less than five waters - they were talked to on these subjects by Captain Lechmere & Mr. Donal who were sent by the Admiral for this purpose to assist Captain Horne, and soon after some of the Men about seven or eight were seized & put in Irons by the Officers of the Ship - quietness was established untill [until] towards night, when the mutineers thought proper to insist on their companions being released. - as they would have
