length is nearly 5 Cables length, the narrowest part 104 fms & the widest only 165 fms with bad anchorage. This place was considered, as the only one worth serious attention, but its being so small & having a very rocky shore with no shelter from Southerly winds, and not fit for ships to run forth in Gales of wind easterly having not room to bring up in, I think it will be laid aside, and only made a little more convenient for Wherries or Packets to resort to, about which men are to be immediately employed. I shall proceed regularly round the Bay & examine particularly the Bar which I have already probed and find to be hard, and after examining the remaining part of the Bay consider finally which is best to be done. After all, I suspect the greatest thing we shall have to do, will be to work at the Harbour of Dublin and make all our efforts there to render it as commodious as possible, for I am certain it can be made much better than it is at present, however all must be fairly ex[amined]
