it might have been laid in Ruins, and my Idea is, that rather than this should have happened, a very speedy capitulation would have terminated the whole busyness [business] in our favor [favour]. The System of present Death or wilfull [wilful] Muster, can never succeed long, and I do not see that high merit in fighting in desperation, as when aided by a system of defence & support. I long heartily to hear of Earl St. Vincent being removed with his Fleet from before Cadiz, for if by a dreadfull [dreadful] storm he should be obliged to the unhappy alternative of entering the Harbour, I think it will be found a very difficult matter to cut his bay out again. The Season is now advancing which to prove unfortunate to our Fleets, would lay us very low indeed.
The Director is once more in good order, except on my own part, who am much afflicted with Rheumatism which however does not keep me from Duty. Our Rendezvous is now ab.t [about] 15 leags. N W of the Texel which the Admiral has wisely chosen for the Winter Months. I am upon very happy terms w.th [with] him. It is now uncertain when we can send a letter, but I expect a chance daily & therefore hope it may be to morrow.
I remain My Dear Sir with the greatest regard
Your faithfull [faithful] & Affectionate Hmble [humble] Servant,
Wm Bligh
