My Dear Sir
When I took leave of you at the Admiralty I felt I was to do my utmost in proceeding according to my appointment, and in consequence, severe as it was, I may say I left my Family at a moment's warning - this will account for my not being with you according to your appointment by your letter to me, which I now have, to meet you on Wednesday morning, as I sincerely wish I could have done. I have nothing but my memory to guide me in giving you an account of what I carried out in the Providence for the Indians. I cannot direct as to quantity, but I would recommend, Flinders to estimate that by his idea of the Natives he may meet with, as he is the best Judge of how numerous they are. I think they are not so much so as the Southsea Islanders, and have not their Ideas of finery. I would recommend the following articles to choose out of.
